Believing Christ is God is not believing he is the Son of God. It denies both God and his Son.
The Father is God. The man Christ is his Son.

Is God the son a seperate and distinct person than God the Father?

It's hard to describe this because in a sense is that Jesus was god in flesh. In other words god came to earth as a man (Jesus) to deliver his message to the world. This is where the Jews, Jehovah witnesses, and Islamic state don't believe this. This was gods will to walk among the humans to bring his message and why he gathering his disciples like Luke, John, Matthew, etc.
