You're assuming A. All relativist are normative relativist ethicists B. Relativism implies subjectivity and that C. Contract (legal) ethics are objective (verifiable in a physical sense).

@yogurtking "because I am firmly against irrationality. I am firmly against anti-science. I am firmly against mythology in our society having any sort of power or weight." OH!! as i am as well. I am also against all these things.. We would be great friends…if only we agreed on what irrationality is, or what anti-science is, what mythology is,or what really has the power in our society. Be blessed, i really don't have much time to argue about things. Peace

@yogurtking If my children jumped of a building ..that is not my fault.. God doesn't make rules and laws…so he can condemn us for not following them… he makes laws and rules…so we don't jump off buildings.. Along with telling us the rules and laws(knowing we still will want to jump of the buildings) God put a giant air bag at the bottom of the building.. you get to decide if you want to jump onto the air bag..or jump to your death.. it all comes to You.. Pride is downfall of all man.

@yogurtking "I am responding to callingheyzeus who did indeed refer to humans as god's property" sorry if i've stepped on your toes..I would agree that Techniquely we are Gods property ..just as a painting is the painters "property" however God gave us full rights to do whatever we want.. "So, god treats us like children – so you'd burn your children and lock them up for eternity.." First of all God treats us like "HIS children" second.. God doesn't send anyone to hell..they walk into it.

@riseofatheism Brain waves have been detected at under 8 weeks…so now what? Define "functioning of the Brain" Honestly if your definition of Human life was that definition…oh how many Children would be saved… however… Babies are still getting killed even up to birth, no thanks to Obama.

@yogurtking "Citing the bible doesn't prove the bible".. hmm never said it proved the bible.. only proved were… Making a strawman… if you are trying to tear down.. the idea of God..and his relationship with man… You should start with… knowing what you are trying to tear down..instead of making up something..and tearing that down. I don't believe in the Your "strawman" i believe in the God of the Bible.

@yogurtking "I can't hate something I don't believe in." i know…that why it make me wonder why you talk so Much about something you don't believe in..and why you have so much passion against it. "I present these comments as evidence that this idea of god is definitely the idea of men"… i don't take your comments as evidence..but your opinion… since there are no sources… i can't take your comments as evidence.

A human being is considered alive by the functioning of the brain. Once the brain starts to function, or ceases to function, you are no longer considered living. Lastly, the brain, in the womb doesn't begin to function until the 28th week of pregnancy.

@riseofatheism "And medical science agrees with me."…hmm really? i love to see a peer-review medical article that agrees that a fetus isn't a human(separate from the mother), nor alive.

Medical fact that a child, from conception..has the Full (separate set of DNA) to be considered its as its own individual. It is also a medical fact that a it is a living Being from conception, meaning that is is a continually growing Unite of cells controlled by its human DNA, just as we are.

@yogurtking "license to treat as mere objects or nonsentient beings."Your alive arn't you? what do you have to complain about…God gave you everything, lets you rebel, lets you do whatever you want, lets you hate him, lets you drag his Name in the dirt and you want him to Bow down to you, in submission, and give you candy, and toys? What kind of agreement is that? Ever heard of the "prodigal son" (Luke 15:11-32) – that story explains Gods relationship with us, yours is a bit of a straw-man.

@yogurtking "Who gives their life for a painting?" ..umm have kids? Would you give your life for your child? Just as You,(hopefully) would give your life for your child, God gave what he loves (himself aka Jesus) for us-His children-who he created. "your theology has him as both extremes" I don't believe God treats us like property..he treats us like his children, and alows us to choose which side we want to be on.. even if the side we choose is what will destroy us.

@riseofatheism Well that nice that you've decided it's unworthy of consideration up to 28 wks. Regardless, whatever you wish to label the child in the womb, abortion by definition is killing a living growing being, isn't it? Can you explain what part of that living, growing beings body is the mother's body?

No. It depends on how you look at it. Abortion isn't a black and white thing. There's late term and early term. There's necessary and arbitrary. There's my choice and my wife/girlfriend's choice. There's her body, and there's my body. Who am I to dictate her body? I don't even believe a fetus is really a human life until it's reached roughly 28wks. So up until then I wouldn't really think it's objectively murder. And medical science agrees with me.

@riseofatheism So if you had been the subject that would have been fine and your opinion would never have been heard today. It's wrong if your the baby isn't it?

Something I didn't notice you say the first time around is that moral relativists aren't sociopaths.

Quite right. Moral relativism doesn't mean no morals. Nor does it mean amoral. It means subjective morals.

I would say it's subjective and no.

I think the best case a moral relativist, (and to be clear I don't believe in an absolute moral standard, but I do comprehend societal objectivity, which we can discuss if you like) is that morality is societal. The more the people accept some behavior as wrong and others as right, the more leaning to objectively right and wrong it is.

And as far as societal objectivity, murder is objectively wrong because it hinders the society. And the well being of a society is the crux of having a society.

Oh and good video. I'm right on with you about the moral relativism. I think it's nonsense.

I agree with you in part. There is objective morality based on subjective values. With certain subjective values (such as valuing human life or human freedom) have objective morals that follow. If I claim to value human life, and kill someone in cold blood, I have objectively done something wrong. So yes I agree there is objective morality in the guise of subjective value.

You're absolutely right in that the relativists' behaviors in the actual circumstances are completely different than when they're just having a conversation. I've witnessed this first-hand countless times.

Just because one can understand that obviousely there is NO right or wrong and good and evil one still can have person his own RELATIVE morality because just like mice we are born with certain moralities. You are an idiot please explain to me how any situation which is matter and energy reacting with each other can make right or wrong?

Hi Greg! I'm an atheist, a "hardcore relativist" and I also enjoy your podcast!

    A couple of points:

    1. It's true that we can't punish people based on some objective moral standards, but that doesn't mean that we can't have some reasons for "brute use of force" against e.g. child molestors.

    2. Your point about all people seeing the differnece between right and wrong in the end of the video, the relativist (like me for example) would say that sure, but it's a subjective opinion.
