Watch our overview video on the book of Jonah, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. The book of Jonah is a subversive story about a rebellious prophet who despises his God for loving his enemies.

From history we know that Niniveh was an assirian city, and assirians did all kind of tortures to their enemies, and that's why Jonah did not want to go there..

    2 Kings 14:23-26
[23]In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years.
[24]And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
[25]He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which He spake by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gathhepher.
[26]For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel.
I understand from this text that Jonah is a prophet of God….he did not do anything in the favour of any king but God decided to help Israel…

I am not sure that 2 Kings shows how controversial Jonah is. I read it just now but he was just delivering God's message.

So even if Jona was rebellious this man said ,he was disobedient, and we all WERE.. And he repented (cried out to the Lord in the whale) and the Lord gave him Grace..

    How beautiful!!

Also what a lesson we see that disobedience ALWAYS have consequenses as wel.. But God is very gracious, more gracious then we could ever be…
And if it was a kind of 'pride -thing ' he could have been wrestling with , (he told them that their city would be destroyed and now his word came not out what would they think of him?)after God showed the city Grace because of their repentance – then we can see here very good that he was walking ,as we call now, "in the flesh" at that moment.. And ALL flesh is Pride and selfish, if we see it or not, all our flesh is bad /evil / dark from nature.. We all have to repent from selfishness and pride and so and so.. Even had Jona… He wanted to see justice punishment/ wraak .. But God asked him twice the same question about two different things happened: is your anger right/truthful/from the right place?… So here we see Gods loving correction towards him.. And then the book ends…so probably he understood than His Grace and love Like they end the movie i sent with vet beautifully i think.. (but we dont know this from the bible, but it would be the most expectful answer ithink.., after getting to know Jona a bit and because he did also obey by the Lords first correction through a storm) so probably he heard clear now after Gods seconden correction through this tree..

My favourite part was when you see the king lays down his kingclothes (shows us to lay down self -deny our SELFes) and all city fast and is in sackclothe all human&animal.. And God got compassionate for them, got tears in my eyes wowowow!!! HISGOODNESSENDURESFOREVER!! (A message for the world right now,to repent from their wicked ways and be changed by His Word Yeshua !!)
And the best verse of all the book that God says should i not feel for this city with more then 120.000 human and also beasts/animals (and love also the verse where Jona says :i knew you were compassionate and ready to forgive and…,)
HE IS SO SO GOOD !!!
To God be the glory forever and ever amen!

It is traditionally held that the book of jonah was written by jonah. This has some very interesting implications itself.

Of course the Lord wouldn't leave Jonah. If He didnt leave Nineveh then He wouldnt leave Jonah as well. He couldve sent another prophet but He still went for Jonah. I think the reason is that God is dealing with Jonah's character. He wanted Jonah to forgive and accept that the Lord loves everybody the same way. In the book, I didn't only see the Lord's love for Nineveh. I saw His love for Jonah too.
