Social Justice Isn’t Justice

You’ll see a lot of references to justice in the Bible, but you’ll never see the word “social” precede it. Why? Is it simply because social justice is a new cause that post dates the Bible? Or is it because social justice, by its very nature, is directly at odds with justice as the Bible defines it? Allie Beth Stuckey, host of Relatable on BlazeTV, takes a fresh look at this important issue.

The Lord is a God of social justice.

That’s the message in many—maybe most—churches and synagogues in America and the West today.

But here’s the problem: The Bible doesn’t actually say that. It says (in Isaiah), “The Lord is a God of justice.” You’ll find a lot of references to justice in the Bible. But you’ll never find it preceded by the word “social.”

But you’re probably thinking, “What’s the difference? Isn’t God the God of justice and social justice?” Well, not if He’s consistent. You see, God cannot be the God of justice and social justice because social justice is not just.

Justice is getting what you deserve without favor. Social justice is getting what you don’t deserve because you are favored.

Justice is blind. Social justice is not.

Let’s say a man robs a store. Justice demands but one thing: that he be tried in a court of justice, and, if he is found guilty, punished.

That is not how social justice works. Social justice doesn’t only ask if the person is guilty. It asks about his economic condition: Is he poor or wealthy? About his upbringing: What kind of childhood did he have? About his race or ethnicity: Is he a member of a group that has been historically oppressed?

Justice demands that everyone be equal under the law. Social justice demands that everyone be equal. Period. Economically, socially, and in every other possible way.

Justice asks, “Who did it?” Social justice asks, “Why did he do it?”

Lost in all these social justice considerations is the individual’s own responsibility for what he did. That’s why social justice advocates have abandoned the term “justice.” They deem justice alone as unfair. And sometimes it is. A man who was beaten by his father and abandoned by his mother is more likely to commit a violent crime than a man raised in a loving home. But those facts cannot and should not determine his innocence or guilt.

Why? Because justice is, first and foremost, about truth: Is the person guilty or innocent of the crime? None of us is omniscient. We don’t know why people do what they do. After all, the vast majority of people raised in abusive homes do not commit violent crimes. Nor do the vast majority of people who are members of an historically oppressed group.

Being a victim, however that is defined, is no excuse for hurting other people. And what about those who are hurt—the victims of those crimes? Shouldn’t they, and other law-abiding citizens, be society’s first consideration?

Social justice advocates say no. They say we need social justice to even things out. And that means favoring the have-nots over the haves—the poor over the rich, the female over the male, and the brown or black over the white.

The Bible does not see the world this way. In fact, it speaks against it in very explicit terms.

Here’s a law in the Book of Exodus: “Do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, and do not show favoritism to a poor person in a lawsuit.”

Here’s one in Leviticus: “Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great but judge your neighbor justly.”

Moses, the greatest lawgiver in history, declares in Deuteronomy: “Follow justice and justice alone.”
And the New Testament declares in the Book of Romans: “God shows no partiality.”

None of this means that there is no place for compassion in a system of justice. Of course, there is. The Bible is preoccupied with the protection of the widow, the orphan, and unfortunate. But compassion follows justice. It doesn’t precede it.

This analysis is shallow and spreads misinformation. You're basically taking verses from the bible and pretty much ingnoring everything else. Social justice (especially defence of the weakest in an economical sense) is one of the foundations of the ancient Hebrew law. True, when it comes to Judgment it is imperetive to be objective and ignore race and class (as it should be), But when it comes to social welfare and protective rights, there is no doubt that the bible favours the weak, even when it comes to limiting the rich.

The current legal is already corrupt and impartial. It’s only there to make money not to rehabilitate criminals. I wrote an entire thesis on this. Blacks and Hispanic are given 20% longer prison sentences than there white counterparts for the exact same crime throughout each state. So here views of justice are a little bit misguided when she says justice under the law. When there is no equal representation under the law. When she quotes justice through the book of Romans she failed to mentioned Romans 12:18 where go will take care of vengeance/punishment towards wrong doers. Including the left and those who claim to be self righteous when they truly are not. Unless you’ve been given the zeal of God as explain in the book of revelation you are not righteous in any way.

When you fix those things, you create a just society, so that when there’s criminal justice being meted out, it becomes more fair. But you can’t have justice in an already socially unjust society until you fix the systems that create those disparities. THIS is what Jesus taught.

The sad thing is this video is based on the modern "definition" of social justice. I remember when fighting against social justice issues were about helping someone who was being discriminated against and punished for something he or she literally didn't do. I remember when fighting against social justice issues looked like fighting against human sex slavery.

I wonder if they point out how unjust America has become.

Social justice has been operating in the justice system since its inception —up until this day. It first asks if you're a man, and if you are, you get more time. Then it asks if you're black, and if you are, you get more time.

An absolute embarrassment of christianity this video shows. Rather than base justice in theology, this video bases it on politics. It is a shame because this video effectively superficializes the faith. by doing so.

You say the bible says "do not show partiality to the poor" but Jesus was poor! He gave up his wealth! Okay, so a little boy steals food for his little sister so that she doesn't starve to death. You punish the boy for justice and then what?……let his sister starve or feed her?……….if you feed her for free, that's contributing to social justice!

Anyone that hears this and blindly supports these claims is too deep in their own echo chamber.

We do not follow God's laws. We follow some, but those laws(like murder and theft being wrong) are in almost all religions and secular theories. Furthermore, who decides what poeple "deserve" when punished? We do not use the bible that's for sure. We use a for profit penitentiary system that actively wants for criminals. We also punish poor people greater even when innocent if they can't make bail.

This was a fun video but it so far off the mark and I feel like they have just gone for what I believe the real goal: problems with social justice. Justice, the law and God are not good fellows in the US. They should have stuck with hating on social justice and been done with it.

There has to be a balance between reason and emotion. Right and left. Men and women. You cannot have one without the other. I am getting so sick of people on both sides roasting the other side from a place of moral superiority as if we can do without each other's perspective. Mostly I lean right, however, reason must lead and guide emotion, but you can never dispense with emotion altogether, it is wise in its own way.

If social justice is truly getting what you don't deserve because you are favored, then if a person is against social justice, that person should hold a belief that Israel doesn't deserve extra care from America.

A bunch of paid professional commentators here to manipulate public opinion. I am sick of this narrow way of describing social justice. Remember all the equal rights we people have fought for along the past 100 years? It is just so easy for people to forget social justice when they are just self-interest seekers.
