What do you think? Does it make sense to ban chokeholds? What would be the alternative?

They made some valid points here. A few things I would add. I did Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for a few years. I’m not going to lie I sucked at it. The amount of training it takes to have a clean technique is incredible. The fighters you see in MMA even amateur MMA have usually been training for a number of years and generally a good number of hours per day. The pro fighters train for a living. It’s a huge part of what they do. You don’t see a huge number of rear naked chokes used in MMA it does happen but it’s not the easiest position to achieve with a struggling opponent. What I was always taught (i sucked, my instructor was awesome) was position before submission. Each of those elements is its own independent skill set and each requires mastery. Right now we have too many police who don’t even have a basic grasp of the law, the constitution, or their true function in society. They don’t get enough training and preparation for their jobs as it is and now we’re going to expect them to have the time to master techniques like this?? Look up the defense for a rear naked choke. It’s really not super difficult. It’s more so once the hooks are in but still very doable. In the example we all just watched you see a controlled situation with no struggle. There are people there to tell him when the guy is out (remember he had to ask). In addition this is his buddy who he doesn’t want to hurt. Now consider a police encounter in an uncontrolled fast paced situation when your adrenaline is pumping and maybe you do have some malice for the guy your fighting with. In addition there’s always the element of fear which clouds comprehension and judgement. Now take into account that a rear naked choke can be fatal in as little as 30 seconds. Sounds like a long time if you just sit in a quiet room and count to 30. In the circumstance I explained above time comprehension can be seriously impaired. With George Floyd how long did it take 4-6 officers to kill him? A number of minutes. Imagine if they had been using a technique that could kill in 30 seconds. Now and perhaps most importantly any firearms training program anywhere in the world will teach you if you are carrying a loaded firearm you never let your opponent close distance. That gun is just as dangerous to you as it is to the other guy. That’s the point of the taser. It allows the officer to maintain distance while more often than not leaving the person alive. Remember less lethal not non lethal. In addition it takes a couple hours to learn how to effectively deploy a taser as opposed to the huge amount of time it takes to master a rear naked choke. What is one of the big problems with taser use? Officers in the heat of the moment when the suspect is already on the ground tasing for too long because they are scared and amped up. Now we want them engaging in more intense hand to hand combat and we don’t expect a similar outcome?? As a side note it would only be a matter of time before a suspect in a situation like this would fake passing out and as soon as the officer lets loose it’s game time. I didn’t even broach the topic of the additional techniques required to get a standing opponent on the ground to try and apply the choke. What about the 5’1” 110 pound female officers? I’m 6’4” I sucked at Jiu Jitsu and there isn’t a female that size on the planet that is going to take me in hand to hand combat. Have you ever heard of a punchers chance? Basically anytime you engage in hand to hand combat anything can happen. I’ve seen people knock themselves out losing their balance while trying to take down an opponent. Anyway I think I made my point. This sounds great but doesn’t stand up to any real scrutiny.

In Basic training my Drill taught us Jujitsu, but that was 2002 when they could still take you out back and kick your ass for not following orders. Top was a big fan of Gracie. He taught us to not compress the esophagus and to cut off the artery. You can really hurt someone if you are not doing it properly and do not have the right training. Veterans for Trump!!!! HOOAH!!!!

The thing is, people don't know/care if its on the windpipe or the carotid. They don't care if the person is no longer responding. George Floyd was unresponsive for a while and the officers remained on his back/neck.

And you keep saying proper training. Officers are notoriously undertrained. Getting credit for a 30 minute training on the weekend isn't gonna do it. And I dont imagine you're gonna tell a suspect to put his head a certain way before you put them in one.

Daniel Shaver and Jemel Roberson were good men and they were both murdered in cold blood by our supposed benevolent, selfless, guardian angels, the police. You don’t give a shit about good people dying, because you support the oath breakers and enforcers of tyranny.

Chokeholds that target the carotids not the esophagus so when done properly shouldn’t stop breathing all that much it should literally just stop the blood and u sleep u wake up a little sore but not much else, the people saying this shit have never had a class on it

If a police officer is on the ground with a UNRESTRAINED person trying to fight, do what you have to do. If a group of police officers is dealing with a RESTRAINED person, I see no reason to use any type of choke hold. In truth, based on personal experience, the majority of police are not trained enough in hand-to-hand self defense. Knowing how to apply a choke hold, and more importantly, knowing when to relax how much pressure you are putting is pretty important and not something you learn in a few lessons. Joe Rogan is a highly trained, very high level BJJ Black belt. Lets not even compare him to your average police officer. Yea, it is great IF YOU KNOW WHEN TO LET GO.

Chokeholds should be legal for officers it is the quickest and one of the more effective ways to subdue people

This time i disagree. I stood up fast had a friend fake a hild to show me position of arm and hands no pressure on my neck they i passed out. Choke holds are a not go howabout cuff feet and net bullets for shotgun.

Police should be required to carry candy with them. For every suspect that turns himself in, the police will give them: 1 regular size pack of M&Ms, one 2 pack of Reese's cups, 1 pack of Bubble Yum, and 1 small pack of Skittles OR Starburst. For every feeling he shares with the police officer he gets a mini candy bar, up to 5. A room will be prepared at the Holiday Inn should they decide to stay in jail overnight. Taxpayers will also be required to pay for any room service or additional channels. I think we can ALL agree on these common sense reforms to our system.

I think that every girl and women should know at least a little bit of jiujitsu. And if they know how to do a proper chokehold they can apply it, wait for their attacker to faint, and they're going to have a few seconds to run.

Yes, ban choke holds. Cops have guns, battons, tazers, mace and dogs. Plus, they always show up in fours so… yeah.

You're getting this backward. Reform police training so they can "properly" perform a chokehold first, not allow chokehold first then 'hope' that police training reform happens. SMH.

I teach Judo and Hapkido. I have suffered knockouts in bouts by, both, concussion and chokes. A properly applied choke feels like nothing at all. They are safe.
