Still the Best Moral Code

Humanity has everything it needs to create a good world. We’ve had it for 3,000 years. It’s the Ten Commandments; ten basic, yet profound instructions for how to lead a moral life. If everyone followed the Ten Commandments, we would not need armies or police; marriages and families would be stronger; truth would be a paramount value. Dennis Prager explains how the Ten Commandments led to the creation of Western Civilization and why they remain relevant to your life today. This video course introduces a ten-part series.

No document in world history so changed the world for the better as did the Ten Commandments. Western civilization — the civilization that developed universal human rights, created women’s equality, ended slavery, created parliamentary democracy among other unique achievements — would not have developed without them. As you will see when each of the Ten Commandments is explained, these commandments are as relevant today as when they were given over 3,000 years ago. In fact, they’re` so relevant that the Ten Commandments are all that is necessary to make a good world, a world free of tyranny and cruelty.

Imagine for a moment a world in which there was no murder or theft. In such a world, there would no need for armies, or police, or weapons. Men and women and children could walk anywhere, at any time of day or night, without any fear of being killed or robbed. Imagine further a world in which no one coveted what belonged to their neighbor; a world in which children honored their mother and father and the family unit thrived; a world in which people obeyed the injunction not to lie. The recipe for a good world is all there — in these ten sublime commandments.

But there is a catch. The Ten Commandments are predicated on the belief that they were given by an Authority higher than any man, any king, or any government. That’s why the sentence preceding the Ten Commandments asserts the following: “God spoke all these words.”

You see, if the Ten Commandments, as great as they are, were given by any human authority, then any person could say: “Who is this man Moses, who is this king or queen; who is this government to tell me how I should behave? Okay, so why is God indispensable to the Ten Commandments? Because, to put it as directly as possible, if it isn’t God who declares murder wrong, murder isn’t wrong. Yes, this strikes many people today as incomprehensible, even absurd. Many of you are thinking, “Is this guy saying you can’t be a good person if you don’t believe in God?”

Let me respond as clearly as possible: I am not saying that. Of course there are good people who don’t believe in God, just as there are bad people who do. And many of you are also thinking, “I believe murder is wrong. I don’t need God to tell me.” Now that response is only half true. I have no doubt that if you’re an atheist and you say you believe murder is wrong, you believe murder is wrong. But, forgive me, you do need God to tell you. We all need God to tell us. You see, even if you figured out murder is wrong on your own, without God and the Ten Commandments, how do you know it’s wrong? Not believe it’s wrong, I mean know it’s wrong? The fact is that you can’t. Because without God, right and wrong are just personal beliefs. Personal opinions. I think shoplifting is okay, you don’t. Unless there is a God, all morality is just opinion and belief. And virtually every atheist philosopher has acknowledged this.

The Ten Commandments are in the Old Testament but that’s not my point. A lot of other religions that even came before, at pretty much the same time, and after Judaism and Christianity have teachings like the Ten Commandments or/and exactly like them. So all he is saying is propaganda and lies.

The first five commandments are centered on serving God. The last five are centered on serving each other as one serves God.

If you have a basic understanding of Torah you realize the man-made substitutions for YaHUaH such as God, GOD, LORD AND JESUS from later languages violate 50% of the 10 Commandments:

I am YAHUAH ELOHAYKA, which have brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other elohiym before me. You shall not make unto you any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I YAHUAH ELOHAYKA am a jealous EL, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and guard my commandments. You shall not take את eth-the name of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA in vain; for YAHUAH will not hold him guiltless את eth that takes את eth-his name in vain. Remember את eth-the day of the Shabbath, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour, and do all your work: But the seventh day is the Shabbath of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates: For in six days YAHUAH made את eth-the heavens and את eth-the earth, את eth-the sea, and את eth-all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore YAHUAH blessed את eth-the day of Shabbath, and hallowed it. Honour את eth-your father and את eth-your mother: that your days may be long upon the land which YAHUAH ELOHAYKA gives you. SHEMOTH (EXODUS) 20:2-12 את CEPHER

As 50% of the 10 Commandments contain contain His name YAHUAH or instructions for Covenant with Him. No man-made images to worship Him. No man-made holidays. He calls His appointments Shabbath. And He means what He says. The truth doesn't stop being true because you haven't accepted it.

The 10 commandments are so relevant that we only use 2 of them in our laws, and those 2 are so self-evident that we'd follow them without the 10 commandments.

You don't need a God, religion, or any commandments. All you need, is to be a decent person.

There are 613 commandments according to Judaism. There is only 1 set that listed as the 10 Commandments in the Bible and it is the one that he is quoting from. The set that called as the 10 Commandments in the Bible is found in Exodus 34 not Exodus 20. Either one of these sets has not changed the world for the better. There is also a summary of the them in Deuteronomy 5 that really doesn't match either set in Exodus. Some Bibles have a heading calling the section a Summary of the 10 Commandments however this heading is not found in the original Hebrew text nor is any headings or punctuation marks. These are all done at the whim of whatever group translated it.

Neither of the 3 sections of the so called 10 Commandments made a huge impact on life. Women's rights were not a thing until the 20th century CE. That is around 3000 years after when we're the 10 Commandments written.

Magna Carta made more impact on the planet than 10 Commandments ever did. The living document called the Constitution of the United States of America has more impact than the 10 Commandments and the Magna Carta.

The 10 Commandments did not lead to Universal Human Rights, Women's Equity, End Slavery, nor create Parliamentary Democracy. These would have developed on their own. They developed because of the oppression put on them by religious intolerance. If people had not rebelled against religion we would not have had the changes that I society needed and deserved.

GOD is love. Love God with all your heart with all your might with all your soul embodied in the first part 1-4 commandments and love for your neighbor embodied in the 2nd part 5-10 commandments.. this is the character of God that people should follow. Like Jesus said if you love me keep my commandments.

I don't think wolves need God to tell them that killing one another isn't helpful to their survival. Now, it depends on what you mean by God telling.
I guess humans are inferior in this sense, that their sentience pushes them to less understanding in some perspectives.

People are evolutionarily pretty well programmed to have empathy for one another, which we developed because working together and protecting each other increases chances survival. Which as an athiest i find a perfect reason to not kill eachother. How is that an opinion? This video is absolutely shallow, and the 10 commandments, while not necessarily bad, are clearly a human creation just like any other ideological rulebook.

Wasn't America one of the last countries to abolish slavery and one of the last to stop segregation?

And the you need God to tell you murder is wrong crap? What the hell? Thats basic morality and empathy. If you need God to tell you murder is bad, you're shitty, simple as that.

You're a monstrous zealot who does nothing but spread lies. For a man who wields his cross as a sword, you have remarkably little grace.

My three laws allow for morally grey areas

God's ten laws allow for multiple numerous black areas

    Who is a better programmer?

If it is obviously amoral to do something, then do not do that thing

Treat others as you would treat yourself

Do what ye will if it harm none

    Who is better?

Ten stupid rules some of which are morally grey, that allows for numerous multiple morally black areas…

Eg… I shalt not covet my neighbours wife…

Obviously morally grey unless you rape or harass her…

Versus three simple rules that easily encapsulate how you should live…

    I covet my neighbours wife…
    OK… But I can't help that… I'm only a man… And I like women… But if I don't harass or rape her…. Its only morally grey… So no biggie…

Predating Christianity by thousands of years and you actually thought you were better than us… I'm laughing…
