I don't believe because this stuff sounds man made. It sounds completely made up. I have zero fear there is a Hell that non-believers go to.

Is he saying that people don't believe the crazy story for emotional reasons?

Why did a man born on the North American continent in the year 1 AD and died in the year 20 AD reject Jesus?

Hypothetical situation: God speaks to you and orders you to kill the family next door. Will you do it? No? Then you DON'T base your morality on God's will. If you say "God wouldn't do that" then you're admitting that Man CAN judge God and your god can't be the biblical God/Jesus, who kills or orders killed millions. Christians must answer "yes" or be revealed as fatuous hypocrites.
Christians say "God is good." But challenge them to back that up with a list of acts that cause so much grief, suffering and pain that their god would never do that to anyone and all you'll get is a stupefied stare. For to list anything would be to judge God, a Christian no-no. Talk about hypocrisy!

I agree with him.  But it is also possible that people "choose" Jesus for reasons that are irrational, emotional, and bull headed.  Maybe they make this choice because they are afraid of dying?  Maybe they are afraid of their families?  Maybe they have never considered options other than Christianity?

There are a lot of possibilities.  He assumes that it is just non-believers who have flawed thinking.  But that might not be the case.

When we hear over and over from Christians that those "other" Christians who kill and destroy the lives of nonbelievers are not truly Christians, our patience wears thin. Choosing which interpretation of this or that Biblical fairy tale to rule your life by is a fool's errand, and has caused much despair and bloodshed.

I don't think it's splitting hairs to actually know what you are talking about and be able to articulate it. If all you can do is degrade the conversation to name calling and not support what you say, why do you comment at all? If your views have such life influencing passion behind them (and it appears they do)… let's talk (not name call or argue).

One of my favorite pastimes is suffering nebulous interpretations by anonymous internet zealots of an already nebulous pile of Bronze Age, blood-soaked, pornographic fairy tales. People have been committing mass murder for 1,700 years because some imaginary beast and his zombie son told them to. Go split hairs with other delusionals like yourself.

So which is it? Is there some benefit to looking at the context? Jesus may of said that, but His life certainly doesn't reflect the way I think your trying to apply it. When they reviled Him, he reviled not…
I think when Christ said I did not come to bring peace, but a sword, He was referring to the division that comes when people believe in Him. Sometimes your own household turns against you because you decide to follow Christ. vs 34-39.
Don't get me wrong.. I'm not a big fan of Koukl

Nice… you know, I'm a Christian and never really liked Koukl's reasonings… just sounds like personal attacks (even if there is a possibility of truth).

Didn't Jesus teach "Love your enemies", "Do good to those who hate you.", and "Pray for those who spitefully use you."? He also said, "My kingdom is not of this world, if it was my servants would fight, but my kingdom is not of this world." Anybody can do what they want in the name of God… It doesn't make it true or correct to that belief or God. No protestant would ever say the crusades were biblical, and we lament the abuses…

That's the same reason I believe in God. Can you tell me how thinking for yourself has lead you to believe there is no God? Just curious…

I'm sure you could say that on the surface people are certainly stiff-necked, rebellious, prideful etc. and perhaps that is the reason they do not believe, but the scripture gives the underlying reason for all this- depraved hearts, dead in trespasses and sins. If God doesn't save- we have no hope in ourselves by trying to fix irrational, narrowminded, emotional bullheadedness 🙂

Other verses come to mind also, like in John 10:26-30, "…But you do not believe because you are not my sheep…" Salvation is not in our ability to attain (not of him who wills or of him who runs) but in the good pleasure of God's will (but God who shows mercy, Romans 9:16, Eph 1: 9-11)
I hope that helps bring some clarification to my comment.

I would completely agree with tothtimeagl in his comment. The bible gives several reasons why people do and do not believe in the Gospel. Those reasons do not rest in man's abilities or deficiencies, but in the sovereign purposes of God. tothtomeagl referred to Matthew 22:14, John 6:65, and Acts 13:48.

Hi Nathan- Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to your comment and thanks for asking about my reasons. I should of known better than to just throw out a statement like that 🙂
GK states 4 reasons why people do not believe. 1) Not rationally thinking, 2) Some people make decisions based on emotional reasons, 3 )Some people are prejudiced/narrow minded and 4) Some people are just "bull headed".

This is why you have so many false converts in the church. There are actually bible verses that explain this. This is idiotic. Matthew 22:14 ,For many are called but few are chosen and John 6:65 No one can come to me unless the Father draws Him , also in Acts 13:48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. Also faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of GOD. It is called nimnuisim.

hmmm… "Christianity-based hatred of Jews"…? Really? From what little I know, the heros of Christians in the bible are all Jews…. so it's seem strange to say that hatred of Jews can possibly be related to Christianity. Maybe some cast based religion….

"If Jesus is the true way to God, then why have so many people rejected Him?" It states clearly in the bible that God has made the heart of man hard, and some people will not be able to understand his words because of this. It also says that a light has come into the world, to a people of the darkness, they are the people of the darkness because their deeds are evil, those who come to the light know the words of God are true.

Your attempt at parroting haughty condescension does not conceal your lack of a real education nor your delusional bent. You believe you have imaginary friends who tell you how to run your life, and who have the power to circumvent all the laws of science. You are plagued by a childish kind of magical thinking that has convinced many to commit atrocities over the past 1,700 years. There are those who find it useful to humor your ilk your lack of cognitive ability; I am not one of those.

@vogue321 The first reel saw Dorothy blown to Oz in a tornado, the last reel shows how Dorothy was returned to Kansas through the Glinda the Good Witch of the North. The first reel declares that Dorothy was alienated from Auntie Em through discontent, and the last reel declares that Dorothy can now find her heart's desire in her own back yard. Hail Dorothy, full of grace !!!

@funboy7979 The Old Testament saw paradise lost; the New Testament shows how paradise was regained for mankind through the christ and how it will one day be restored. The Old Testament declares that man was separated from God through sin, and the New Testament declares that man can now be restored in his relationship to God.

@vogue321 Why do you keep referring to the Bible as "the word?" Why do you keep insisting anybody who's studied the Bible as a phenomena rather than a personal religious belief has not read the Bible? Why do you Christians never acknowledge and condemn the legions of mass murderers through the centuries who committed their atrocities in the name of Jesus? You could start with militant Christian soldier Adolf Hitler. Christian Nazi video: watch?v=0Z7GsE7G_eA&feature=related
